An “unprecedented” number of businesses in Galway and Mayo have signed up to attend a swine flu seminar in the city next week.

The chairperson of the HSE West’s regional health forum Cllr Padraig Conneely has blasted the health authority for its failure to collect €11m owed to University Hospital Galway by private health insurers.

“Horrendous” is how the chairman of the HSE West’s regional health forum has described the fact that almost 90 beds have now been closed in local public hospitals due to budgetary cutbacks.

The HSE is considering proposals to bring 16 beds in Mullingar Hospital, which had remained closed for the summer period due to budget cutbacks, back into operation.

The HSE and Department of Health announced that the swine flu vaccination programme will commence on November 2. As very few people in Ireland have any immunity to swine flu, over the coming months, the HSE will offer a swine flu vaccine to the entire population.

Funding of €36,000 for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services based at Castle Street car park has been welcomed by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD.  The funding has been issued by the Department of Health and Children as part of their 2009 allocation from National Lottery funds. The funding has been issued to aid in refurbishment work at the social services centre which provides numerous important services around the wider Castlebar area.
